- Hand soaps often contain lauryl sulfates and/or laureth sulfates instead of traditional plant fats for providing the ‘soap’ base. A person’s skin can be very sensitive to the repeated use of these lauryl and laureth sulfates.
- Triclosan is the traditional antibacterial agent in topical hand soaps. However, triclosan’s impact on human health and impact on the environment is under review by several organizations.
- Synthetic perfumes are commonly found in hand soaps. These aroma producing esters may be irritable (e.g. causing a headache, etc.) to the user but the natural scents from lavender, rosemary and peppermint are often used in aromatherapy.
- Chemical dyes are often added to hand soaps to provide a visual match to the scent. Cordillera Foaming Natural Hand Soap contains no added artificial colour.
Natural hand soaps could become easily destabilized by hard tap water while washing the hands. Natural hand soaps are also very prone to microbial contamination. Therefore the product requires less than 0.1% stabilizer and less than 0.01% preservative added to help maintain product quality. Temporary sedimentation may occur when the product is subjected to cool temperatures.
